Wishing on falling stars

She's a dreamer and she knows it

So,  because we need as many great stories about this wonderful man as possible (and because I don’t think I ever shared the full story here and today was the memorial), I wanted to share the story about the one time I had the utmost privilege and pleasure of meeting Cory Monteith.

On December 3rd and 4th, his band, Bonnie Dune, were doing some concerts in my area, one in Santa Barbara (to the south of where I live) and one is San Luis Obispo (to the north of where I live). I bought a ticket and went to the one in Santa Barbara. It was amazing and the band was so so good!!

The next day was the show in SLO but I had to work until 8PM that night. I was working at a Starbucks right off the freeway. About 2PM, I was on bar and making drinks when some people walked in. I didn’t lift my head yet but when I did, first I noticed the person in front and then my train of thought went *Oh, the guy behind him is really talllllll———HOLY FUCK THAT’S CORY MONTEITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* and I was so caught off guard that at once I started shaking from head to toe. The girl at the register took his order and put his cup in the queue. As I was making the other person’s drink I still couldn’t stop shaking. I tried to calm down and mentally told myself “Adrienne, stop it! You are 26 years old! He’s just a human being like everyone else!* Cory had wandered over to sit at the bar right in front of where I make drinks and was casually people watching and smiled at me (At this point I walked over to my friend/shift supervisor Ericka and told her I needed more ice/started freaking out and silently screaming in her ear “Ericka that’s Cory!!! That’s Cory Monteith from Glee!!! Holy shit, that’s Cory!!! Oh my God!!!”). When I started his drink, a Venti iced hazelnut latte, he asked for an extra pump or two of hazelnut. I really wanted to connect and talk with him so I squeaked out, “Sure, anything for Cory Monteith.” When he realized I recognized him, I thought he’d be annoyed or like, try to run out ASAP, but instead he BEAMED at me and laughed. Seeing him smile like that calmed me down enough to tell him I had gone to the Bonnie Dune concert the night before (I still had my pink admittance wristband on) and how amazing I thought they were and how I was a huge Glee fan. He smiled and laughed and said “You did go (seeing the wristband)! Awesome!! Thanks for coming out and liking…me!” I finished off his drink and handed it to him as he asked “Are you coming to the show tonight?” I told him I had to work until 8 PM and doors were at 7:00PM and it takes half an hour to get there so I wasn’t sure yet. He told me they didn’t go on until 9:30, so I said I’d definitely think about it then. He thanked me for the drink and I shook his hand (I was still kind of in shock) and he walked out.

As soon as he did I started jumping around and freaking out! My friend, Jessica, was actually there at the store at the time but had had her headphones in the entire time and didn’t see him. I screamed at her and told her “CORY MONTEITH JUST CAME IN!!!” and she went “WHAT?!?!” and I was basically dancing around like a lunatic. Ericka laughed at me but then I told her I was bummed that I didn’t ask for an autograph because I didn’t want to come off as…creepy fangirl? I don’t know. She sighed at me.

And then guess what?? CORY CAME BACK IN!!! He walked over to the drink hand-off plane and grinned at me mischievously and asked “Can I get more ice?” I smiled and said of course (even though I could tell and see he really didn’t need more ice). Jessica had her headphones off and I introduced her and he grinned. I was still a little too nervous to ask for an autograph and just then Ericka came up behind us and said, “She loves you and is freaking out so she’s too nervous to ask. Can she have an autograph?” and handed him a paper cup and a china marker. He laughed so hard and said “YEAH!” and signed it. Then, feeling a little bolder, I asked if I could have a picture with him. He said yes, so I ran to get my camera from my purse (I had used it the night before and still had it in my purse). When I went to have my picture taken, I apologized for how I looked ( messy hair in a bun, no makeup at all, steamed milk and syrup all over me) and Cory smiled and just told me I looked beautiful. He also got a picture with Jessica. So, after that, I was ecstatic and thought that was it, but he surprised me further! He said, “Could you write your names (mine and Jessica’s) down for me?” I was like *Oookay?* but I did and when I gave him the paper he smiled and said, “So, you should definitely come to the show tonight, I’m putting you on the list!” MY MOUTH DROPPED OPEN! He smiled and then said he had to go, so he gave us hugs and said he’d see us tonight. As soon as he left I basically broke down and was jumping and screaming. For the rest of my shift I couldn’t keep the grin off my face! When the next shift supervisor, Eric, came in, he was like, “Why are you so smiley?” so I told him, basically screaming the story to him. He laughed and said, “What time are off?” I told him 8PM and he said, “Hmmm, you can be off at 7PM.” I was so happy!!! So, Jess stayed with me and at 7PM, we raced to my house to get ready (shower, makeup, nice clothes) and we went to the show. I wasn’t sure what being put “on the list” meant but when we got there, I told the girl collecting tickets that we were “on the list” hoping that we were and if not, I was willing to shell out money for the show and lo and behold, we were on the list, so we got in for free! We found a spot and rocked out to the opening band still playing and Bonnie Dune when they came on.

After the show, the band came out to greet people (like they had in Santa Barbara) but Cory came out this time too (he didn’t in SB). When he saw me again, he said “Latte girl!” and I couldn’t help but smile. I got another autograph and hug from Cory and one from all the band members and we stayed around until they packed up all their stuff and we waved goodbye as they left.

So, yeah, that was my encounter with Cory. He was/IS seriously one of the nicest persons and one of the most beautiful lights I have ever met. He could have come in, gotten his coffee and left, but no, he made my experience with him one of the best experiences of my life. I hope when people remember Cory, they remember his kindness and love for everyone he meets because I know that no matter what, I’ll never forget.
